Registry of Motor Vehicles Responds To Concern Re: Notice of License Renewal …

Folks may remember that I spoke out back in January when the RMV decided that, due to budget reductions, they would no longer mail notices to residents when their licenses were due to expire. Eliminating this service has been a concern to me, as many residents could unwittingly be found to be violating the law, with resulting legal and insurance implications.

I am pleased to note that we have been working on a solution to this issue with the RMV to make sure that residents get notices when their license will expire, and that we have come up with one answer.

The Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles has acted to address the need for timely notice of a license expiration date with a new web site application. Folks can now receive an email notice when their license will expire by linking to the following address:

https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/RMVReminder/intro.aspx.

Please note that drivers must sign up at least 45 days before their license would expire. Folks will be notified a month in advance that their license is due to expire, and can choose to be notified by e-mail, phone, or text (though please don’t text back while you are driving!)
